Can contact lenses get stuck behind your eye?

It's actually impossible for contact lenses to get lost or even trapped inside the eye. The anatomy of the eye itself acts as a barrier that keeps the lens on its surface.

Why lenses cannot get stuck behind your eye

Because of the natural anatomy of your eye, it is impossible for a lens to become lost behind it. The eyeball is covered by a thin moist lining called the conjunctiva. This lining folds at the back of your eye and becomes the covering of the white part of your eyeball. Because the conjunctiva is one continuous layer, nothing will fit or move any further than the edges of your eye.

How to remove a lens from your eye:

When a contact lens gets stuck, it is likely that it has folded in half or that it shifted under your upper eyelid. To remove a dislodged lens, we recommend you follow these steps to ensure that it is safely removed from your eye.

  • Add a few drops of contact lens solution or eye drops to your eye
  • Close your eye and gently massage the eyelid. The aim is to locate the lens and move it into a position you can see and handle.
  • Repeats steps 1 and 2 if necessary. This time, allow the solution or eye drops to soak the affected area. Once located, gently massage the lens back into its intended position.

In some cases, If it gets really stuck, you can carefully turn your eyelids inside out to find it. To do so, look downwards, and use a cotton wool bud to take hold of your eyelashes. Gently and rapidly turn your eyelid inside out. You should then be able to see the lens by tipping your head backwards, allowing you to remove it easily.
